Tre Rivali at the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel | Milwaukee, Third Ward
On a snowy weekday afternoon a few days after Christmas, my mother & I had a relaxing lunch at Tre Rivali. We were seated in a comfy leather corner booth with a view of the snowy intersection of E Chicago & N Broadway Streets.
The hotel itself is uniquely beautiful, which Tre Rivali enhances with its clean & bright interior, a mix of industrial & contemporary design with a splash of Mediterranean flair. My favorite part was the Hipster Cocktail Party playlist in the background, adding to the coolness. I imagine this is the type of restaurant where chic NYC magazine editors & fashionistas lunch.
The Mediterranean influenced menu is broken into a few categories: snacks, salads & veggies, hand-made pastas, sandwiches and large plates. We weren’t too hungry & given the chilly temps, both ordered the butternut squash soup which was served in beautiful earthenware, poured table side over roasted pumpkin seeds (I tried recreating the soup the following weekend & failed…in an epic way).
Next, we enjoyed the foraged mushroom wood fired pizza. Picture creamy goat cheese, green garlic pesto and a touch of lemon to brighten each bite. A glass of the 2014 Benzinger Sauvignon Blanc was a perfect compliment to the meal, so decadent (& hopefully made us look hipster-cool) on a weekday afternoon.
We spotted Executive Chef, Heather Terhune (you may remember her from Bravo TV’s Top Chef), in the open kitchen, taking a break to sign an autograph or two. A bit strange, but I guess this is the era of celeb-chefs. The service was fantastic & not too busy. Just a few other day drinkers were spotted, toasting the holidays. Cheers!
